Decline and fall of the puppetmasters

From the Observer

I drag up memories of this shabby affair because Chomsky is the co-author of the “propaganda model” of journalism, a theory endorsed by a surprisingly large and disparate group. Chomsky thought that corrupt journalists follow the agenda of their rich owners and corporate advertisers and brainwash the population into believing the lies of the political and commercial elites. The squalor of the mass graves of Srebrenica ought to have discredited him for good.

  1. “The only escape for believers in the propaganda model is to say that it does not matter if Labour or the Tories win elections because their policies are identical.”

I’m not sure I’m remembering this right, but the one article of yours that’s stayed with me was the one where you showed that the difference in spending plans between Tories and Labour was just “noise”, that is, of the same order of magnitude as the observed differences between planning estimates and actual implementation.

If I say, following you, that their policies are “identical plus-or-minus expected error” do I get to escape or not?

  2. In 2001 that was true, by 2009 Labour had wacked up public expenditure perhaps a little too high!

  3. What? Only one article of Nick Cohen’s has stayed with you? It must surely have been the only one you had read before this recent one, then, themos.

  4. I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog and was
curious what all is required to get set up? I’m assuming having
a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m
not very web savvy so I’m not 100% sure. Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks

  5. Hi there! I could have sworn I’ve been to this website
before but after reading through some of the post I realized it’s new
to me. Anyhow, I’m definitely delighted I found it and I’ll be bookmarking and checking back
    frequently!
